Labman have developed a variety of systems recently that automate a number of laboratory processes and link them together via a series of driven axes, conveyors and actuators. Such systems are computer controlled with integral barcode reading and automated transfers etc to ensure the parts and consumables are directed to the correct parts of the system for assembly or analysis. Data obtained from the system can be automatically obtained from and transferred to LIMS as the process occurs. In this respect multiple 'modules' or robotic systems can be interconnected to automatically process samples from a storage module or buffer and dispose of the sample after analysis is complete. Modules can also be bolted on at a later date to expand on the original design. The best example of a fully automated process is the Vitens water laboratory in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, shown in the below links.
