Cardiac Sensor System Electrode Painting Robot

LiDCO Cardiac Sensor Systems approached Labman with a requirement to automate their cardiac sensor electrode painting process. The sensor which consists of a polyurethane body was required to be coated with silver/silver chloride paint both inside and outside.

The sensor preparation was previously performed manually with exceptional difficulty due to the very exact tolerances required. This was also very time consuming.

Due to ever increasing demand quarter on quarter LiDCO needed to automate the electrode painting process. The cycle time per electrode had to be much faster whilst maintaining the extraordinary standards required for medical equipment.

Labman produced a robotic system that holds over 400 unpainted electrodes. The system coats 2 electrodes at a time using precise liquid handling syringes and a secondary optical sensor to check for overfilling. A flicking operation is performed to remove excessive paint from the outside of the electrode. Each sensor is then held in a drying rack until it has dried sufficiently to be dropped into a collection bin ready for the next stage of the preparation process.

This system is now installed at LiDCO's London site and is the first of two such systems. Development work for Labman to automate other key stages of the process is currently being undertaken.
