As our summer interns leave us for pastures new, they let us know about their time at Labman. Last week, we said goodbye to Ben as he returns for his final masters year as a mechanical engineer at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. Take it away Ben!
The best part of working at Labman for me was being able to put my engineering knowledge into practice to create something successful. I worked on a project with a client to develop a proof-of-concept testing rig, which will be developed into part of a future Labman robot. I found that this opportunity gave me a great insight into the development cycle of a robot, involving research, design, manufacture, and testing. Whilst working on this project, I did not feel like the stereotypical intern; doing all the simple and boring tasks and making the teas and coffees whilst someone else does all the interesting work. I know that I made a big difference on my project, and that to me has made this such an enjoyable and valuable experience.
I never really knew what to expect in my 10 weeks at Labman, as I had little experience with automated systems. After this time, I can now see why it is such an important and interesting field within engineering. I have learned many things regarding design and manufacturing which I know will prove useful for my future engineering endeavours.
No matter my question (or mistake), the Labman team were always very friendly and happy to help, and allowed me to make the most of my time here. It is very refreshing for even the most senior people within the company to be friendly, approachable, and full of helpful advice. There’s always a lot of fun to be had here and there are plenty of people I will miss (including Gilly the dog), so here’s hoping I’m invited back.
