From educational robots to global automation leaders

Over four decades ago, a small business began with a big idea: to bring creativity and intelligence to robotics. Since then, Labman has evolved through creativity, reinvention, and precision engineering - into a company at the forefront of global laboratory automation.

1979 – Systems Control is born

It all began in 1979, when George Carter founded Systems Control. Based in North Yorkshire, the company specialised in educational robots, supporting the learning and curiosity of the next generation of engineers. It was a time of experimentation, practical invention, and grassroots innovation - the DNA of what would become Labman.

1992 – A new era: The birth of Labman Automation

In 1992, a pivotal moment arrived. Andrew Whitwell bought the business, rebranded it as Labman, and the focus shifted towards creating bespoke automation solutions for pioneering businesses.
What remained constant? The commitment to problem-solving, innovation, and building machines that make a real difference.

1997 – Innovation in action

Just five years later, Labman was commissioned by Huntsman (now Venator) to design a system to automate the Hegman Gauge process for measuring pigment dispersion in paints and coatings.

This system became the very first TIDAS - a product that would grow into Labman’s flagship solution. Since then, TIDAS has been refined through multiple generations, and now operates in over 40 countries worldwide, leading the global market in its category.

2011 – Moving to Seamer

In 2011, we moved into our current headquarters in Seamer, North Yorkshire. The new facility gave Labman the breathing room it needed to scale up operations and talent, while keeping our playful, people-first culture alive - complete with a climbing wall and a fireman’s pole, still very much in use today.

2017 – Expansion, recognition & royal visit

2017 marked a major turning point with our first major HQ expansion, almost doubling our floor space. The moment was made even more memorable with a visit from HRH The Princess Royal, who officially opened the new extension.

As she departed, robotic arms waved miniature Union Jacks - a fitting tribute to a remarkable day in Labman’s journey.

2020 – New growth & rapid response

Construction on a second extension began in 2019 and completed in early 2020, adding more build space, a gym, and a seminar room to support our growing team and ambitious systems.

But it was March 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic hit, that Labman showcased the true spirit of rapid innovation and community care. Within days, we launched the Labmask Project, a not-for-profit initiative supplying single-use face visors to NHS and frontline workers.

In just 37 days, we produced 252,220 Labmasks and delivered protective screens to local businesses. It was a moment that proved not just our turnaround and technical ability, but Labman’s heart.

2025 – Looking ahead: Expansion #3

Now, in 2025, we’re expanding once again. Our third major extension is underway and set to double Labman’s current capacity by the end of the year. This continued growth is a direct reflection of our strong customer partnerships, global reach, and the increasing demand for high-quality, flexible automation.

A legacy of lasting innovation

What started as a company building educational robots has grown into a trusted partner for some of the world’s most advanced labs and manufacturers. From bespoke systems to flagship products like TIDAS, and the integration of AI and complex technologies, Labman’s strength lies in its ability to evolve – without ever losing sight of its roots.

For us, legacy isn’t about looking back – it’s about building forward. Every system we build is made to last. Every partnership is built on trust. And every challenge is an opportunity to learn, adapt, and grow.
