About to embark on his Master’s year at Leeds University studying Mechatronics and Robotics, Joshua now has some real world experience under his belt after finishing his internship here at Labman. Here’s what he had to say about his summer here.
I first learned about Labman at a career’s fair. I asked the employee manning the stand what it was like to work at Labman. His reply perfectly reflects how I now feel having worked at Labman for the summer. With a stern face he described it as awful… awfully great!
It’s honestly hard not to fall in love with Labman. I really appreciate all the sports and activities on offer. Getting the lads together for our weekly kick around was a particular highlight. No other employer is going to be able to compete with having a full squash court effectively on the factory floor!
It’s easy to point at the quirky culture of Labman as the soul reason that made this internship a 10/10 experience. The fact is if you strip all that out, you’re still left with a fantastic company that anyone would be lucky to work for. The robots are, without exception, incredibly interesting. When I walk around the factory floor, I feel like a kid with the biggest Lego collection in the world! You’ll hear this all the time but the people I’m proud to call my co-workers are really above the rest in ability and kindness. I want to get involved with every project and work with everyone but there could be some logistic challenges with that.
I had the opportunity to help out on a lot of projects and robots but I spent the majority of my time with Labman working as project leader on an R&D device that could be used on the end of a robot arm to autonomously detect, pipette and dispense an extremely precise and relatively large amount of liquid. It was really rewarding to be responsible for a practical engineering project that will hopefully be adapted and improved and maybe even seen in a Labman robot one day!
I can’t recommend working for Labman any higher. Definitely an experience that will stay with me for a long time.
