Women in STEM event at Labman visual

Katie SimpsonPublished 20th Sept 2023

Labman are hosting an inspirational day of celebrations on 12th October 2023, to raise awareness of the achievements made by women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), as part of Ada Lovelace Week.

Ada Lovelace (1815 - 1852) is believed to have written the first computer programme, but her visionary work wasn’t recognised until around one hundred years later. She is internationally recognised and every year celebrations around the world take place during the second week of October known as Ada Lovelace week. This event marks the first ever Ada Lovelace Science Cabaret in the North of England.

Here at Labman we take pride in our work with STEM educators as we continue with our ongoing pledge to encourage children (boys and girls) to start thinking about the fantastic career opportunities available in this sector. It is never too early to have fun with engineering! In 2021 we gained recognition for having the highest number of active STEM Ambassadors from a North East SME. We actively seek to take part in events which help to showcase the fun and rewarding opportunities available in engineering careers. We believe we have a vital role to play in inspiring the pioneers of tomorrow; perhaps they will build robots which can speed up the process of drug discovery, aid cancer screening, help discover optimal performing battery materials or aid world food security.

Typically however, engineering disciplines have always been dominated by males, and therefore we take great pleasure in hosting an event to turn the focus towards women in STEM!

As part of this event we are running an inspirational carousel tour, aimed at secondary school female pupils. We invited as many local schools as we could fit into one day, to take part in techy activities and watch demonstrations of live automation projects. They will speak to real engineers, have a chance to play with robots and of course have fun in our award-winning factory.

By night, we will host a Science Cabaret with talks, music and entertainment for academics, researchers, customers and friends of Labman who are connected with STEM. Guests will listen to five inspiring female speakers who will be talking about their research interests, careers and successes. We are delighted to have partnered with Dr Marcella Sutcliffe, Trained Writing Retreats Facilitator at Chapelgarth who brought us this fantastic line-up of speakers.

Raffaella Ocone will be speaking at Labman's Science Cabaret
Dr Marta E. Cecchinato will be speaking at Labman's Science Cabaret
Dr Gozie Offiah will be speaking at Labman's Science Cabaret
Dr Martine J. Barons will be speaking at Labman's Science Cabaret
Prof. Sophie Nixon will be speaking at Labman's Science Cabaret
