Amy Nixon has been with us at Labman for 6 years now and recently met up with Joy Fletcher, a previous summer intern and new graduate employee.  Amy can tell you all about their day and what it meant to them to be involved and help celebrate

For this international women’s day, I joined Teesside university for an inspirational day listening to women from different backgrounds talk about their experience in different fields of work and how they overcame their obstacles to get to where they wanted to be.

Character building workshops

I also helped the students in character building workshops.  This involved a few items where students would have to use their imagination and think of what they could be used for rather than their original use. I thought it was an interesting task as although the products have a simple use it doesn’t mean they can’t be used in other ways. I loved helping the students with this exercise and seeing them use their imaginations and creative thinking to come up with different ideas for what a candle holder or a document holder could be rather than what they are.

Inspiring women

In addition, the students from Acklam Grange showed a presentation on women that inspired them and explained why we learn more about the women we look up to and how this impact today’s youthful minds from authors such as JK Rowling to activists such as Rosa Parks who stood up for equality and many more.

Throughout the day Teesside university provided a ‘graffiti wall’ for everyone attending to write inspirational words, quotes or comments on the ‘workshops’ to inspire others to follow their dreams and passions. Overall, I really enjoyed the day, I’m grateful to have the opportunity to have been involved as well as meet some wonderful and inspiring women.
